A New Ragnarok Experience for Everyone!

New Frontiers will be a completely custom-built version of Ragnarok Online, designed around the pre-renewal format. Rather than reusing existing assets, it will introduce original towns, custom NPCs, new lore, and brand-new zones created from the ground up.

This project will be developed as a community-driven, open-source-style initiative. Once complete, it will be released as a free patch for the official Ragnarok Online client. Players will be able to use the patch to play, customize, or host their own servers.

New Frontiers will not include any copyrighted files. Players will need to obtain the official Ragnarok client separately. The patch will contain only custom code and content created specifically for this project.

The original Ragnarok Online was built for large-scale player populations, often supporting up to 10,000 users per server. Events like War of Emperium were designed to host hundreds of players within a single map. Today, such numbers are uncommon. Most private servers see fewer than 2,000 concurrent users. With this in mind, the New Frontiers world will be designed for a more focused and connected player base of around 500 to 1,000 concurrent users.

The game world will revolve around a single major hub city, supported by smaller encampments scattered throughout the frontier. All major gameplay areas and instance entrances will connect back to this central hub. This layout will promote player interaction and help the world feel more alive and populated.

The overworld will be compact, with a large portion of the gameplay taking place in instanced environments. This structure is intended to improve performance, reduce player isolation, and ensure a smoother, more engaging experience.

New Frontiers will offer two types of instances: standard instances, which will always be accessible, and time-locked instances, which will only be available on specific days, weeks, or months throughout the year. This rotating system is designed to keep the gameplay fresh and varied over time.

In addition, New Frontiers will be modular in design. The game will launch with a core version, and once that foundation is complete, optional modules—similar to expansion packs—will be developed to expand the experience. This modular approach will allow server administrators to choose the content they want to include, customizing their servers to match their preferred style of gameplay.
